Daniel Lawrence Abrams' Tips for Directing Stand-Up Comedy Shows

(ESPECIALLY LOW-BUDGET / DIY SPECIALS WHERE YOU CAN'T AFFORD A THEATER AND JIBS)

1) Lots of Coverage (at least 3 cameras, 6 is great, 12 is extravagant). See standard plot below.
2) Include audience reaction shots (handheld roving camera to spot/capture good audience laughs).
3) ISO record: Comic’s Microphone & Back-up LAV, plus at least 3 audience microphones.
4) Rent “Hazers” (not foggers) - enough to give room ambiance/depth (to see beams of light).
5) If there’s crowdwork, be sure to get those audience shots (with pickups if necessary).
6) Performer’s clothes should stand out from background (different colors to avoid “floating head”).
7) Preview routine to identify where specific, tailored directing/camera placement may be needed.
